I often get asked how I can afford to travel. I am not rich, and nor do I have a parent supporting me. I do have a good job and a few tricks that help me afford to travel. My biggest tip for budget travel is that I do not start planning my small weekend trips until I have checked out the flights.

Don’t start with a destination

I generally do not start with a specific destination in mind. I will check out flight deals from my starting location that are within my budget. This is how I ended up in Halifax during the middle of winter. I knew I wanted to get away, and it did not matter which destination it was. I found a cheap flight and jumped on it because the deal was not going to last. Do not get bogged down in the minor details.

Check out Priceline

Priceline is one of the more unique budget travel websites. If you are willing to accept the unknown, then it is a perfect place to score some amazing flight or hotel deals. It allows you to pick your own price for flight, hotels, and rental cars within reason. The “Name Your Own Price” tool lets you set your budget, and then it finds a great deal for you. The only issue is that you do not get the details until you have paid for the trip.

Don’t be scared

The longer you delay, the more risk there is that you will lose out on that amazing deal. Take the chance and book that flight to your chosen destination right away. Worry about the little details later. If you delay in booking your trip, then the flight will be gone and you will regret not booking it when you first found that good deal. Fear can ruin your fun.

Go with the flow

Do not get stuck on one specific destination, but check out others. Tunnel vision will increase your cost and hinder the possible savings. There are fun and unique activities to be found around the world. It does not matter where you are, but what matters most is that you are enjoying what you are doing.

Trust you gut

If the gut says jump, then jump. Your gut will never lead you down the wrong path. Follow it, and it will lead you to an amazing adventure that could take you anywhere around the world. I did not plan to go to Mexico, but I am glad that I just went for it and took that leap.

Travel is all about stepping out of your comfort zone and exploring the world. Over thinking can cause you to miss out on an amazing deal. What is worse is that the fear of the unknown can stop you from booking an epic trip. Find a great flight deal, and then book that trip. You never know where it will take you or where in the world it could lead.
